Numeric stats are so popular and widely used for the following reasons:

Numbers are immediately understandable and comparable (by both developers and players); they allow us to compare two characters and determine which one is better than the other

Numbers can be naturally plugged into systems (just think about the damage inflicted by an attack and the HP of the target; the most basic combat system is just a difference between the two!)

Numbers are at the core of game balance (which we’ll discuss in detail in Chapter 11, Balancing Your Content and Systems)
